“Igga?”
Inga smiled indulgently at the little voice that piped up from the table. “Yes, Diya?”
Three year old Diya Skywalker sat at the table, face adorned with a mustache of milk. She was currently enjoying a snack after waking from her nap. “What did Mommy’s job used to be?”
“Her job?” Inga took a soft cloth and wiped Diya’s face clean. “You mean before she was a Jedi?”
The door slid open and Ben bounded into the room. “Hi, guys!” He threw his book satchel into a chair and grabbed a cookie. “Yum! Inga, guess what we did in class today?” Ben gobbled down the cookie and didn’t wait for an answer. “We learned about lev-i-ta-tion.” He grabbed the glass of milk that Inga put in front of him. “I can’t wait to pick up things with my head!”
Inga hid a smile. “You mean with the Force.”
“Yeah, and then--”
Diya cut in. “I was talking, Bennie!”
Ben looked confused. “When?”
“Before you got here!” Diya stuck out her lower lip, and looked at Inga for backup.
Inga didn’t give in or budge. “Diya, you can both talk to me, you know that. There’s plenty of time to hear Ben’s story and answer your question.”
“But I want to know what Mommy’s job used to be!” Her little face was turning red in frustration.
Ben rolled his eyes, used to his sister’s antics. “Is that all? Momma used to be the Empress, dummy.”
“Ben!” Inga scolded.
“Sorry, Inga.” Off Inga’s look, he apologized to his sister.
“What’s an Empress?” Diya looked confused. “And what was Daddy? Was he an Empress, too?”
Laughing, Inga picked up the plate of cookies and placed them on the counter. Diya hopped out of her seat and ran into the playroom, Ben behind her. “No, Diya,” Inga said, entering the room. “Your father was not an Empress. He was the Prince Consort of the Empire.”
Diya’s eyes were huge. “Prince?” She twirled in place and squealed. “I’m a princess!”
“She’s a princess?” Ben looked skeptical, then alarmed. “I’m not a prince, too, am I?”
Inga chuckled. “No one is a prince or princess anymore. Your mother abdicated to become a Jedi before Ben was born. Abdicate means she left the job of Empress.”
“Because being a Jedi is more important, right?”
“That’s stupid, Ben. Being a princess is more important!”
“Princesses are stupid!”
“You’re stupid!”
“You’re stupider!”
“Children!” Inga sat down on the couch and motioned for them to come sit next to her. “Neither one of you is stupid. I never want to hear you say that to one another again.”
The kids hung their heads, and Inga sighed. “Being a Jedi is very important, Ben. But the work your mother did as Empress was very important too. She’ll tell you about it one day, but she worked very hard.”
Diya tiled back her face. “What did Daddy do as a prince?”
“He worked very hard, too. Setting up the Jedi and keeping your Mom happy.”
The kids seemed to think about that for a minute. “Well, what did you do in the Empire, Inga?” Ben asked, and Diya nodded.
Inga smiled. “I took care of your Mom and Dad, just like I take care of you two,” she said, hugging both children in close.
“I’m sorry I said you were stupid, Diya,” Ben said quietly.
“Me too, Bennie. I’m sorry we were naughty, Igga.” Diya smiled. “Were Mommy and Daddy naughty like us when they were in the Empire?”
Inga coughed to disguise a laugh. “Not at all, kids.”
