Summary: Luke and Mara make progress in their new relationship.
A/N: So I always thought that Mara would have some lingering issues when it came to the more intimate parts of a relationship with Luke Skywalker. This is my take on exploring that. Also, you can never get enough "telling Leia they're engaged" fics!

Progress

“You sure you’re ready to do this?”

Mara turned her head at the sound of her fiancé’s voice. She met his gaze, smiling at the encouragement she saw in his eyes. “Yes. Let’s do this.”

Luke smiled back, still in wonderment at her characteristic self-assurance. But, uncharacteristically, he could still sense an undercurrent of nervousness lying under the surface. He squeezed her hand, then reached out to activate the door chime.

A few moments later, Leia stood in the now empty doorway, wasting no time at pulling her brother into a warm, firm hug. “Luke! It’s so good to see you again.”

“You too, Leia.” His voice was muffled against her shoulder and hair, which was free of its usual intricate hairstyle. She and Han must’ve just returned to Coruscant as well.

Leia broke away from Luke just enough to smile at her other guest. “It’s good to see you too, Mara. I’m glad you are well.”

Her voice was slightly stilted, and Luke suppressed a chuckle when Leia held out a hand instead of hugging the woman who would soon be her sister-in-law. But Leia did not know that yet, and as past experience with Mara had demonstrated, the smuggler did not like people invading her personal space.

It was an issue she and Luke were both learning to deal with, one that he was looking forward to dealing with more in the future.

“Oh, where are my manners? Come in!” Leia ushered them through the doorway, turning on “hostess mode.” She guided them to living area. “Can I get you anything to drink, Mara?”

Mara shook her head, taking a seat on one of the chairs opposite the sofa. Luke sat next to her, moving the chair a bit closer than usual. “No thank you, Leia. I don’t think Luke and I will be staying very long. We’ve got…things to do.”

“Of course, we have to leave early tomorrow morning in order to make the rendezvous with the Chimaera. Are you sure we can’t offer you a ride on the Falcon, Mara?”

There was a slight flash of pain in Mara’s expression as she was reminded that she no longer had a ship, and Luke sent out an encouraging caress through the Force. She glanced at him, returning it in their unspoken language that they’d already begun to be fluent in.

“That’s all right, Leia,” Luke answered for her. “I was able to get us a shuttle. I figured they owed us after acquiring the Caamas Document for them.”

“Right, of course.” Leia turned around in her chair, probably to call Han to join them, but stopped and faced them again. “I’m sorry, did you say get us a shuttle?”

“Yes, why?” Again Luke had to suppress a chuckle at the confusion on Leia’s face.

“Nothing, it’s just…well…you two did just spend an awfully long time together, and I always had the impression that…well…”

Mara smirked. “That I hated him?”

“Well, yes.”

Mara met Luke’s gaze, piercing green eyes filled with pure, unabashed love. “I did. But things change.”

Overwhelmed by the affection in her eyes, Luke unconsciously reached out for Mara’s hand. She stiffened at first, both as a result of an old, unconquered impulse but also because Leia was right in front of them. But Luke was undeterred and gently threaded his fingers through hers, until he felt her relax and accept his embrace.

When Luke looked back at his sister’s face, it was filled with shock and awe as she stared at their conjoined hands. Just then, Han sauntered in the room, wearing a huge grin when he saw his brother-in-law again.

“Hey, kid! Great to see you! How’re you doing?”

Luke had to extricate himself from Mara to return Han’s hearty back-thump, but as soon as he sat back down he took her hand again. “I’m fantastic, Han. Thanks for asking.”

“So what’s going on?” He took the seat next to Leia, oblivious to the handholding and his wife’s shocked expression.

“Well.” Luke had expected that when the time came, he’d be nervous, but instead found himself to be completely at ease. After all, he was surer about Mara than anything in his entire life—even more than becoming a Jedi. This was the right decision, for both of them. “Actually, I was just about to ask Leia to call you in here. I wanted to tell you and Leia that Mara and I have decided to get married.”

The silence in the room was almost palpable, and out of the corner of his eye Luke caught Mara shaking her head. “Way to break the news easy, Farmboy,” she muttered affectionately.

“Wait.” Leia finally tore her eyes away from their hands. “You two are…engaged?”

“Yes.”

Han, predictably, was the first to break the silence. “That’s great news, kid!” He jumped up from the couch, and another round of back-thumping commenced. This time he pulled Mara up and gave her a hug as well. She stiffened a bit, out of surprise or discomfort Luke couldn’t tell, but returned the hug adequately.

“Thanks, Han.” Luke grinned at his old friend’s enthusiasm, but turned his attention back to his sister, who still looked like someone just told her that she was about to have triplets. “Leia?” he prodded, not needing her approval but wanting it nonetheless. His sister’s opinion had always been very important to him.

Leia blinked, looking to Luke, then Mara, then back again. A smile slowly spread across her face and she bounded off the couch, pulling her brother into a heartfelt embrace. Through the Force, he could feel her unspoken question, if this was what he truly wanted. In returned he opened himself up to the special twin bond they shared, allowing his happiness to bleed through. Leia squeezed him harder in return, finding words to be unnecessary.

She quickly let go of Luke and turned to Mara. “Congratulations. I’m so happy for you. And you better make sure that my brother buys you a nice ring!”

Mara smiled but shifted awkwardly. She still wasn’t used to overt displays of affection, and the idea of being a part of a family was all very new to her. But again, it was something that would grow normal with time, and Luke was looking forward to showing her that. She took a big step forward, wrapping an arm around her future sister-in-law. “Thank you. Luke and I are very happy.”

“Speaking of happy,” Han pushed himself in between Leia and Mara, then grabbed Luke by the arm to put him next to his bride-to-be, “I think the happy couple should be on their way, don’t you think?”

“But they just got here, Han!”

“Leia, they just got back. Do you really think they want to be here right now?”

Leia smiled slyly, and Luke blushed at the insinuation. Mara, on the other hand, looked entirely too amused.

“Yes, Han is right. You two go, have fun doing whatever it is you’re going to be doing. We’ll comm you from the spaceport.” She said all this while ushering them to the door and pushing them through with no remorse.

Alone again on the other side, Luke chuckled, taking back his fiancée’s hand. “That went well.”

“Yes. No yelling, so I’d take it as a positive.”

“Did you really think Leia was going to yell?”

Mara thought on that for a moment, then shrugged. “Nah, I guess not. She’s been trying to pawn you off years.”

“Hey!” Luke shoved her in mock protest. They reached the lift, and Luke once again took Mara’s hand in his. This time, she did not flinch, and he smiled inwardly.

Catching his emotion, she raised an eyebrow at him. He shrugged. “Just thinking that’s progress.”

“Right.” The lift arrived and they entered. Luke was pleased that they were the only ones there. Not that he minded being around other people. It was just so nice to be alone with Mara.

* * *

They’d spent an inordinate amount of time together the past several weeks, trapped in the Nirauan caves, and while Luke was certain that getting married was the right thing to do, he couldn’t help but wonder if things between them would change once they went back to “real life.” The realistic part of him knew that things had to change, as they wouldn’t be around each other all the time and they had to learn the art of compromise that made relationships, and marriage, possible. While they knew nearly everything about each other thanks to their Force bond, that didn’t necessarily mean they knew how to be husband and wife.

And Mara especially was unsure of herself when it came to giving and receiving affection. She’d allowed Luke to comfort her when the Fire was destroyed, and that was the real breakthrough. When they’d kissed for the first time, there had been no hesitation whatsoever. But lingering impulses remained inside her, and every once in awhile they’d rear their ugly heads.

The first time occurred on the Chiss ship, on their way back to Coruscant. They’d slept together out of necessity, as there was only one bunk, but did not make love. Luke was more than willing, but sensed that Mara wasn’t ready yet, so he didn’t push her. Merely holding her in his arms was still amazing to him.

Now they were about to spend another several days together, on the way to the Chimaera for the signing of the Peace Accords. But before then Mara had asked to spend an evening apart, saying she needed some space in order to get used to this weird idea of dating. Luke, of course, acquiesced to her request.

They ate a light meal together, then Luke walked Mara home. They kissed and petted in front of her doorway for several minutes, and Luke reveled in this new feeling of closeness. Finally she pulled away. “Have a good night.”

“Want me to pick you up tomorrow? We can have breakfast on the way to the spaceport.”

“I’d like that.”

“Okay. I love you.”

Mara smiled, hesitating just a moment before returning the words. “Love you, too.”

He watched her disappear inside her apartment, feeling a strange sense of emptiness at being apart from her. Other than their short stop on the New Republic base, this was the first time they’d been apart in several weeks. He knew that, because of their Force bond, they’d always be able to sense each other no matter how far apart they were.

Well, we’ll have to learn to be apart from each other eventually. It was in the nature of their work that they’d be apart for long periods of time.

Still, he didn’t have to like it.

He ran his hand over the door, then left.

Luke was awakened in the middle of the night by a loud pounding on his door. He startled, reaching toward the chrono to check the time. It was past midnight.

What the hell? He reached out into the Force, trying to determine who it was. He broke into a grin when he felt Mara on the other side of his door. But then he grew nervous. If her roiling emotions and the sound of her pounding against the door were any indications, something was wrong.

Luke stumbled out of bed, grabbing a shirt and pulling it over his head on the way to the door. When the door opened Mara stood still for a moment, hand poised to knock again. It dropped quickly, and she glanced around Luke to look into his apartment. He briefly tried to count how many times she’d been inside over the past ten years, and realized that it wasn’t nearly enough.

“Um, hi.” Her toe twisted against the floor. “Can I come in?”

“Sure.” He stepped aside, allowing her to enter the apartment. She set down a bag he hadn’t noticed she’d been carrying.

“I figured we could get an earlier start if I just stayed here tonight.”

“Oh. Right.” He tried to wrap his head around the idea that Mara was standing in his living room in the middle of the night. Not only that, but she was his fiancée, and they’d been on approximately one date together in their entire lives.

But then again, his relationships had never been typical, and he was certain Mara was the same way.

“Luke?”

Her question broke through his musings. “Yes, Mara?”

She stepped close to him, and bit her lip. “I lied.”

He gave her a confused look. “What?”

“I didn’t come here so we could get an early start.”

“Okay,” he said slowly, his brain still rattled from sleep. “Why are you here, then?”

Mara took a deep breath. “For this.”

And then she closed the distance between them, pressing her lips to his in a hungry, desperate kiss.

Catching her intentions through their bond, Luke groaned and kissed her back with fervor. His arms wrapped around her in a strong embrace and she threaded her fingers through his hair, moaning against his lips. After a few moments Luke pulled away, murmuring to her as he kissed down her throat. “You know I’m fine with waiting.”

“I know,” she shuddered as he began to suckle at her throat, “but I’m done waiting.”

Luke swallowed hard. “Okay then.”

They kissed again, growing more urgent as time went on. Eventually Mara’s hands came up to push Luke’s shirt over his head. It fell unheeded on the floor as Luke returned the favor to Mara. He ran his eyes over her womanly form, at the full, perky breasts barely contained against intricate black lace. He had never expected that Mara Jade would wear such impractical undergarments, and wondered if she’d chosen them especially for him, a thought that made him grow even harder.

After a few more moments both their pants fell to the ground, then Luke scooped Mara into his arms and carried her to the bedroom. She didn’t protest his chivalrous gesture, and counted that as even more progress.

He deposited her on the bed, not waiting a moment to crawl on top of her. They kissed again, wet and hot and full of passion, hands moving everywhere all at once. They took their time exploring; they had all night, after all.

Eventually Mara reached behind her back to undo the clasp of her bra. Luke helped her remove the garment, then found it hard to breathe once he was gazing upon her naked chest. He had always appreciated her figure—he was only a man, after all—but never once imagined that he’d be in the position, literally, to see her like this in person. It reminded him how she must feel about this entire situation—that she loved him dearly, but still found it very odd to be intimate with the man she’d hated for so many years. They’d grown past that and all their other issues, but old habits die hard, especially for someone like Mara Jade. It was the reason why Luke was willing to do anything to make her comfortable, even wait to make love for the first time.

He should have known that Mara was the type of person to take progress into her own hands.

So to speak.

Without bothering to speak, projecting his desire over their bond, Luke bent down and began to suck and kiss one breast, bringing up his left hand to caress the other. From the guttural sounds coming from her throat, he was obviously doing something right, and kept at it, almost expecting her to push him away at any moment.

But she didn’t. He continued to lavish attention on her chest, until Mara’s hands moved from his chest to his shorts, and pushed down urgently. He allowed her to roll them over, and she tore off the offending garment before rearing up to sit astride him. She stared at his dick for a long moment, then back up at his face. He must’ve worn an uncertain expression, because she leaned down and kissed the tip of his cock, earning a low growl from the back of his throat. Again he sensed her wonderment that this was actually happening, but it was not an unpleasant thought. Merely amazement that things had turned out this way, and that she was so incredibly happy about it.

She continued to give his dick the same attention he’d given her breasts, and then he had finally had enough. He tugged impatiently at her panties until Mara got the idea and pushed them down her legs. Then they were naked, completely bare against the other…and Luke found that things had never felt so right.

They kissed again, caresses growing urgent and daring, before Luke rolled them over again and positioned himself above Mara. Her face was already glowing and flushed and she looked more beautiful than he’d ever seen.

He nuzzled her throat, suddenly overcome with emotion. “I love you.”

“I love you, too,” she replied, eyes blinking rapidly.

He felt her inside his mind, urging him on…and then he was there, inside her. Inside Mara Jade, the woman who would be his wife.

They gasped in unison at the new, incredibly pleasurable sensations. When he was all the way in he paused for a moment, giving her time to adjust. Slowly she moved her hips against him and he took that as encouragement to begin, making long, slow thrusts inside her.

They fell into a rhythm as easy as old lovers, and through the Force Luke could feel Mara’s pleasure as well as his own. He adjusted his stokes to accommodate her wants and desires, and she slowly began to spiral out of control.

Luke leaned down to suck at her throat again, and she gasped in pleasure. “I can’t believe this is happening,” he heard her whisper, so softly that he wondered if he’d heard the thought inside his head.

“I know.” He brushed a lock of hair from her face, smiling at her with love and affection. “It’s amazing.”

“Yes, it is,” Mara agreed.

It was amazing, in so many ways. Amazing that the two of them had finally stopped dancing around each other after ten long years. Amazing that Luke had gained the courage to propose. Amazing that Mara had found the strength to say yes. Amazing that they had survived to live a life together. Amazing that she was willing to learn to let go.

Their coupling grew more fervent, until Luke could hold back no longer and thrust against her as hard as he could. She did not protest, but wrapped her legs around his waist, urging him deeper. Her hips rose in time with his thrusts, spurring him on.

Wanting to bring her to completion first, he angled his thrusts so that he was rubbing more against her sensitive clit and brought his fingers up to play with her nipples. It only took a few more moments before she was shuddering below him, whispering his name as she gave in to her pleasure.

Hearing her gasp his name sent Luke over the edge and he grasped her hand as he came, waves of pleasure so intense rushing over him, unlike anything he’d ever felt before. Judging from the look on Mara’s face, this was something completely new for her as well.

They didn’t speak as they calmed. Luke finally rolled off her and wrapped her in his arms, kissing her shoulder as they met each other’s eyes. He couldn’t help it. “Well?”

She smirked at his earnestness, but decided to indulge him. “Well…I think that I can definitely get used to that, Farmboy.”

“Can you?”

“Yes.” She cuddled up to him, draping a leg over his and placing a hand against his cheek. Pulling him down into a kiss, her smirk turned into an affectionate smile. “I can.”

They kissed once more, then drifted off to sleep, content knowing that, while they still weren’t completely there, the progress they’d made together was enough to prove that they would make it.
